Jennifer Lopez puts Sweetface clothing label on Hiatus

Filed under: Fashion, Jennifer Lopez, News Articles by Imko

Check out this breaking news story taken from today’s WWD issue, written by Julee Kaplan. It covers Jennifer Lopez breaking out of apparel in the U.S. I believe the article does concentrate on the negative a bit too much, though, considering that her clothing is doing great internationally, with over 35+ J.Lo by Jennifer Lopez stores.

Jennifer Lopez is pulling the plug on her contemporary sportswear brand, Sweetface, after six years in business. The last collection, spring 2009, is in stores now, but there will be no further shipments

“In light of some new company strategies, we have decided to put the Sweetface line on hiatus while we prepare to reintroduce the brand in the near future with new messaging points and an entirely new fashion point of view,”

the company said Tuesday.

How and when that relaunch will take place was not revealed. With the shuttering of Sweetface, the only apparel-related businesses remaining in the U.S. for Lopez are her JLO by Jennifer Lopez branded costume jewelry, which Macy’s continues to carry, and the Victoria’s Secret catalogue carries the brand’s shoe collection. Each of those are produced under licensing agreements. The company also continues to do well with fragrances; there have been six scents launched with Coty Inc. to date, and a seventh called ‘My Glow‘ is due to be introduced later this year.

The shuttering of Sweetface follows several years of struggle for all of Lopez’s apparel labels — and is in sharp contrast to the hype generated by her launch of the JLO brand in 2001 as one of the first celebrity fashion lines. Lopez heavily promoted the collection and even held fashion shows during New York Fashion Week in a bid to establish herself as a serious designer.

There are currently 38 J.Lo by Jennifer Lopez stores internationally
There are 38 J.Lo shops worldwide.
But while the collections sold well initially, they ran out of steam and have been rejiggered repeatedly over the last several years. In 2007, the company closed its JLO by Jennifer Lopez junior business in the U.S. and decided to only distribute the collection outside America. That business was replaced by a new line for the U.S. called justsweet, which closed in September after only a few seasons at retail. Company executives had planned to relaunch the JLO brand in the U.S. exclusively on ShopJLO.com in March, but that has yet to transpire.

As for Sweetface, it first launched as an urban streetwear spin-off to the JLO line in 2003 and soon after became a higher-end contemporary line selling to specialty retailers including Shopbop.com and Intermix. In 2006, the company was said to be bringing in about $200 million at retail, but things headed south soon after that.

Now Lopez — who was rarely seen wearing her own label — is banking that her fashion fame is higher overseas than in the U.S. Sweetface Fashion Co., the parent for Lopez’s stable of brands, still produces and distributes the JLO by Jennifer Lopez brand throughout 40 countries, where there are currently 38 freestanding stores operated under franchise.

Introducing New Fragrance: My Glow by Jennifer Lopez

Filed under: Fashion, Featured, Jennifer Lopez, OJF Exclusives, Photos by Imko

‘My Glow’ is the latest addition to the success that’s called the Glow collection. The original Glow by Jennifer Lopez scent launched in 2003 as her debut perfume and until now has had it’s biggest success out of all of her fragrances.

The Glow collection started with Glow and was followed by Miami Glow, Love at First Glow, Glow After Dark, Glow Shimmer and Sunkissed Glow.

The fragrance was developed while Jennifer was pregnant with her twins and inspires the relationship a mother has with her child.

“Every baby is an angel.”

said Jennifer Lopez. Which clearly transpires to the capsule of the flacon which has an angel on it. The bottle is the first out of the Glow collection that has a different shape than usual, the flacon also has a more classic look.

The ad campaign was shot in September last year by legendary photographer Carter Smith, who also shot her last editorial for ELLE magazine.

The Fragrance:
Top notes: Lavender flower, water lily, freesia
Mid notes: White rose, wet leaves, peony, casablanca lily
Base notes: Skin musk, milky sandalwood, precious woods and heliotrope

Available editions:
Eau de Toilette Spray (50 ml) $49.50
Eau de Toilette Spray (100 ml) $59.50
Tender Body Lotion (200 ml) $29.50

‘My Glow’ will be available in October 2009 at department stores across the country. No word yet if Coty Inc. has plans to also release the fragrance internationally.

Jennifer designs jewellery for celebrity auction

Filed under: Fashion, News Articles by Lianne

Jennifer Lopez and other celebrities have designed jewellery for an auction featuring celebrity memorabilia that will benefit the Prince’s Trust and other charities.

The whole collection can be previewed at auction house Bonhams in New Bond Street, London next Tuesday. Following the display, the exhibits will return to New York before being auctioned at Bonhams and Butterfields in Los Angeles on May 28.

Half of the proceeds of the auction, which is being organised by Los Angeles-based charity auction campaign Stars For A Cause, will go to charities chosen by the participating stars.

The other half will go to the Prince’s Trust, which helps young people develop confidence, motivation and skills to find work.

Troy Jensen blogs about working with Jennifer

Make up artist Troy Jensen wrote a blog titled; ‘Jennifer Lopez shines in Tokyo’, about working with Jennifer in Japan over the past weekend:
Troy Jensen

I had a great trip to Tokyo, Japan with Jennifer Lopez for her spokesperson role with fashionable hand bag line, Samantha Thavasa. Jennifer was a trooper as we and the rest of her team worked long days of TV interviews, store appearances and non-stop photo shoots. Morning-glam was the best part of the day. It was so much fun creating all the different looks. Jennifer looked stunning all day long. The make up I created for Jennifer’s long days had to not only look flawless but last from morning until night. I kept Jennifer’s flawless skin sheer with a light moisturizer, concealer and just a touch of matte liquid foundation, while using taupe brown and beiges for a day-time glamorous smoky eye. Peach cheeks complimented Jennifer’s natural skin tone and I kept her lips shimmering nude. For an all-over glow, I applied a body lotion with a touch of shimmer.

I am looking forward to seeing all the different looks I did on Jennifer as they come out. Including an amazing look for a Harpers Bazaar Japan cover. After This trip Jennifer sure deserves a spa day.

Jennifer Lopez: “Who wouldn’t want to wear borrowed dresses ...

78th Annual Academy Awards, 2006.
With the worldwide economy in turmoil, glamour lives in the run-up to Hollywood’s annual Academy Awards extravaganza on Sunday night, but brands are finding ways to save a buck: staging a cocktail party instead of a dinner, flying in fewer staffers or cutting back on or eliminating gift suites.

Some New York-based jewelers, including Kwiat, have not returned with Oscar week suites. Others, such as Verdura, are bringing select pieces for one-on-one stylist appointments. Harry Winston and Chopard, which have stores on Rodeo Drive, are simply working out of their boutiques.

Jennifer Lopez said the question of what looks appropriate is slightly ridiculous because nothing people wear to events is anything more than public relations for the designers.

“I don’t think there’s anything wrong with playing dress up right now,” she said. “Who wouldn’t want to wear borrowed dresses and borrowed jewelry? And anyway, I think you can get criticized if you’re wearing borrowed dresses now because it’s borrowed, and I think you can get criticized for it if it’s not because you bought it during the current economy. So I say do what makes you happy and wear what you want because the only thing that really matters is if your mother calls you up the next day and says, ‘What were you wearing?’”
